{"id":113,"date":"2009-07-17T21:05:51","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T21:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/intentionaliving.wordpress.com\/?p=113"},"modified":"2009-07-17T21:05:51","modified_gmt":"2009-07-17T21:05:51","slug":"is-it-safe-to-eat-cold-cuts-or-lunch-meat-during-pregnancy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/livingintentionally.org\/?p=113","title":{"rendered":"IS IT SAFE TO EAT COLD CUTS OR LUNCH MEAT DURING PREGNANCY?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By : Sophia Levis<\/p>\n<p>There are at least two areas of concern in regard to eating lunch meats while you are pregnant:\u00a0 nitrates and listeria.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-packaged lunch meats often contain high levels of a preservative called sodium nitrate.\u00a0 There have been few studies related to the effect of sodium nitrates on pregnancy , but some experts suggest that nitrates may cause problems during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest concern with lunch meats during pregnancy is the risk of listeria.\u00a0 Listeria is a bacteria\u00a0 that can be found in deli meats as well as vegetables and processed foods.\u00a0 This bacteria can cause an illness known as Listeriosis, which can cause any number of problems during pregnancy such as<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Miscarriage<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Premature delivery<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Infection to the newborn<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Death to the newborn\u00a0 (about 1\/4 of the cases of perinatal Listeriosis\u00a0 result in stillbirth or neonatal death.)<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of Listeriosis may include mild flu like symptoms, headaches, muscle aches, fever, nausea and vomiting. If the infection spreads to the nervous system it can cause stiff neck, disorientation or convulsions.
